The global operations footprint for IDEM, the Infectious Disease Emerging Market Business Unit, consists of
manufacturing sites in Korea, China, Japan and Germany, centralised services in Philippines, Hong Kong and Ireland and
the corporate headquarters in US. The organization is responsible for managing supply of Lateral Flow
Diagnostic Tests for Covid 19, HIV, Malaria, Hepatitis C, Flu and a range of Tropical diseases.
The IDEM Operations team is rapidly expanding as we provide product & service responses to the diseases mentioned
and as we develop our go to Market infrastructure and processes across our target geographies in Africa, Asia-Pacific,
Eastern Europe, Middle East and Lat Am. To ensure we can rapidly expand our Operations capability starting within the
development of robust, automated process designs which transfer seamlessly to manufacturing, we are recruiting an
Automation Engineer that will help us build the right products, processes, and systems capability.
The role will offer the opportunity to work closely with exceptional teams of experts and industry-leading technologies
to support the high-volume manufacture of our diagnostic testing products.
The Automation Engineer will be responsible for the efficient running of high volume, automated production lines at
The successful candidate will be fluent in the programming, de-bug and support of PLCs,
vision systems, robotics and sensors typically used in such automation environments. He/she should have prior
exposure to continuous flow, high volume, automated assembly and packing processes and have a history of problemsolving and continuous improvement in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
This varied role will allow an engineer who is interested in developing their career to get involved in all aspects of the
automation process – from concept development, budgeting/purchasing, supplier engagement, through to process
development, installation and qualification.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Automation Engineer will:
Identify new opportunities for automation within the manufacturing process.
Contribute to all stages of process development from planning, proposal, budgeting, purchase, through
ution, delivery and review.
Work with Process Development, Quality and Operations teams, lead Software activities with the project teams
to ensure new automation solutions are designed, delivered programmed & qualified on time, within budget
and with high quality.
Lead design and development of controls solutions to ensure process OEE is maximised and maintained.
Monitor the automation process on an ongoing basis.
Develop and maintain clear and accurate documentation of automation equipment and processes.
Proactively research new technologies within all areas of automation, software systems and tools for potential
adoption in processes.
Be responsible for Software Engineering in the area of machine and manufacturing process control.
Work closely with cross-functional teams to fully comprehend automation issues, gather information and
troubleshoot/ solve problems.
Ensure any equipment downtime issues are resolved in minimal time and lessons learned incorporated to
Ensure system maintenance and backups are completed at appropriate intervals.
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing tasks within time standards, efficiently, as needed.
Provide staff training on software-specific topics where necessary.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university in automation, mechanical, electrical/electronic,
or software discipline with minimum 5 years' experience supporting or developing automated assembly
Demonstrated capability in process development and transformation.
Strong understanding of automation standards, architecture and related automation systems, including process
Strong knowledge of software development methodologies.
Proven programming, troubleshooting and maintenance ability with PLCs, including hardware layout and
software applications, ideally across a number of industrial platforms.
Good knowledge of Fieldbus and HMI systems.
Ability to read and interpret maintenance procedures, equipment manuals, work orders, and electrical
schematics to perform required maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting.
Experienced in use of common robotic systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support virtual program management requirements.
Written/verbal English language skills.
Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
Demonstrates self-direction and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Available to work overtime/shift hours when required to resolve urgent plant issues.
